We’ve made a couple changes that I hope will make it easier and more enjoyable for people to participate in our awesome club:
- new days
- new location
- more volunteer opportunities
- mentorship program
- cultural exchange trip
the most important thing, first meeting on Wednesday, January 25th!
2nd and 4th Wednesdays
Our awesome sponsor club, Paradise Valley Rotary, meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 5:30pm. We having a standing invitation to just show up and hang out with them, even if we don’t have a project to report on. I would highly encourage everyone to try and make it to one of their meetings at least once a year. Go by yourself or go as a group! You can find a map
here.
To make it easier for everyone to attend a Rotary meeting, we’re going to move East Valley Rotaract to the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. This also opens up possibilities for participating in Camelback Crossroads happy hours (1st and 3rd Thursdays) and their service projects, without bunching up too many activities into the same weeks of the month.
All our meetings and events will always be posted at least 1 month out on the calendar on the front page of our website,
EVRC Calendar. Direct anyone interested on Rotaract to our website! All of us are working hard to produce content for the website–
if you would ever like to write a blog post about an event you’ve participated in, let me know!
new location-Boulders On Broadway
Join everyone on Wednesday, January 25th for our first happy hour of 2012! Camelback Crossroads Rotary has been meeting at Boulders for the past month (after being on Mill Avenue for 6 months) and they’ve found the bar to be friendly, have good food, easy parking, and plenty of space. I’d like to get everyone’s opinion of this spot before we make more reservations. You can find directions to Boulders here:
Boulders On Broadway.
brush up on community gardening
Join Laura and I at Changing Hands Bookstore on this Wednesday, January 11th for panel on community gardens. Some of the best gardeners and community garden programs in Phoenix will be in attendance. Whether you’re interested in helping out more at UMOM or just love gardening, meet us at 7pm at the bookstore and join us afterwards next door for a snack
Find all of the details on the panel
here.
hike the Arizona Trail
If you missed Laura’s email about the Arizona Trail hike on Sunday, January 15 you can find the details on the Facebook event here: Arizona Trail Hike. It is a state-wide effort to raise money for Polio Plus by hiking parts of the Arizona Trail and raising money through sponsorships. After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing a referral link that you can post on your Facebook page to encourage friends and family to sponsor you.
get your hands dirty at UMOM
It’s time again to garden at UMOM! Saturday, January 21 at 9am we will meet at the front office, check in, and head back to the Garden. All tools will be provided, but if you have garden/work gloves please bring them. Maintenance and planting will take between 1 and 2 hours.
get colorful for Banner Children’s Hospital
Join Camelback Crossroads, East Valley Rotaract and anyone who wants to run an awesome 5k for Banner Children’s Hospital. Participants are encouraged to wear white on race day. At each 1k you get sprayed with a different water soluble, organic color! Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 28th! Everyone signs up individually, but choose “Rotary Road Runners” during registration to run as a team

Help homeless youth by donating gently used clothing to the ASU Rotaract clothing drive. Dress clothing and suits are needed most. Clothes can be dropped off to ASU Rotaract, Jessica or at the storage unit in Tempe (Arizona Storage Inns at 1st Street & Hardy). I’ll be going through my closet this weekend and plan to donate at least two bags of clothes!
ASU Rotaract and Mesa West Rotary are long time supporters of Home Base, cooking and serving dinner to the youth often on Saturday night. Home Base is a free shelter for homeless youth, encouraging residents to pursue their education or enter the workforce while they are living at Home Base.
Rotarian mentoring program
Mesa West Rotary is piloting an internship program for Interact and Rotaract and are awesome enough to include a mentorship component for those Rotaractors who are out of school and in the work force. Please let me know if you would be interested in being matched with a Rotarian mentor and I will get you the details! (PS this is the first mentoring program for Rotaractors in our district and we are really proud to be a part of it!)
